Memories of Richard Atkinson
Richard P. Atkinson "Grumpy" Our loving husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa (pa pa), "Grumpy" and friend, Richard Park Atkinson (71), passed away at home after a brief illness on September 10, 2009.He was born on October 31, 1937 to William Chapman and Jeannette Park Atkinson. He was raised in Murray, Utah and attended Granite High School. He married his high school sweetheart Judith Peterson on July 10, 1959 and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 19, 1981. Richard was a friend to all and a man of many talents. An avid sports player, he loved baseball, basketball, and bowling and once bowled a 300. For many years he raced at the Salt Lake Fairgrounds and was known there as "Old Reliable." An expert mechanic, Richard loved cars and worked on them all his life. He spent many years working for a Ford dealership. Even in retirement he couldn't keep away from cars and was known to help anyone in need. He was able to fix absolutely anything. When not working, Richard was at the lake, boating with family and grand kids, and teaching them how to waterski. He will be greatly missed and is survived by his wife; brother Frederick Atkinson; children Barbara (Jeff) Sanders, Sally Atkinson, Jeannette (Scott) Harris, Rick (Christine) Atkinson, Dani (Bryan) De Laney; nineteen grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his parents, six siblings, and his grandson Michael. Graveside services will be on Monday September 14, 2009 at Redwood Memorial Mortuary (6500 S. Redwood Rd.) at 11:00 a.m. There will be a one-hour viewing prior to services.
