Alfred Memories of Alfred "AL" Bergen Shortt

Alfred Bergen Shortt "Al" Alfred Bergen Shortt passed away October 2, 2009 in Salt Lake City, UT surrounded by his family.He was born March 27, 1921 in Salt Lake City to Charles Shortt and Matilde Olina Johnsen. He married Lucille Yvonne Eldredge June 14, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple and they were married 57 years prior to her passing in 2003. He later married Ruth Rothe; they divorced and remained friends. Al's boyhood was divided between Salt Lake City and Mink Creek, ID working on farms and ranches. He graduated from Granite High School and attended the University of Utah. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940 and enjoyed a 22 year career which took his family across the country and overseas. Dad was an avid horseman and he settled on a farm in American Fork, UT after his military service where he could raise his children and horses. He was an educator and a natural born teacher and outdoorsman. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were recipients of his knowledge and treasured the time they spent with him. He was an example to many of strength, integrity and service to others. Al worked for Kennecott Copper and Utah Power and Light Company where he retired in 1986. After retiring, he and Yvonne served a mission in Troy, New York. As civilization encroached on American Fork Dad and Mom divided their time between Star Valley, WY, Neola and Washington, UT. He was generous with his time, tools, and talents and was the neighborhood handyman wherever he lived. He truly appreciated the many friendships he made in his travels. His homes were always wide open to his large extended family and many memorable times were had running rivers in Wyoming and riding in the mountains of Utah and Wyoming. He is survived by his children Terry, Jill Preece Blevins (Woody), Kelvin (Kathy), Ann Bills (Jim), Ken (Marilee), and Wayne (Leslie); 20 grandchildren, and 36 great-grand-children; sisters Joyce Michels and Elsie (Max) Cannon. He was preceded in death by his wife Yvonne, parents, eight brothers and sisters, and his grandson Matthew. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the American Fork 33rd Ward, 1305 North 100 East, American Fork, UT. Friends may call Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. at the 33rd Ward. Interment will be in the American Fork City Cemetery under the direction of Anderson & Sons Mortuary. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the LDS Philanthropies: Perpetual Education Fund, 15 E. South Temple, 2nd Floor East, Salt Lake City, UT 84150
