Rufus Bolton Astin Memories Memories of Rufus Bolton Astin

Rufus Bolton Astin 11/29/1918 ~ 3/21/2010 Our wonderful dad and grandpa, age 91, returned home to our Heavenly Father on March 21, 2010. Rufus was born the fourth of five children on November 29, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to David Astin and Alberta Bolton Astin. He attended school in the Granite District including Granite High. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rufus grew up in the Winder Ward and served a mission to the Spanish American states from November, 1940 to April, 1943. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946, the last seven months of which he spent on the island of Saipan with the 537th Quartermaster Company. A few months before leaving on his mission, Rufus met the love of his life - Phyllis Summers - on a blind date arranged by his cousin. He asked her to wait for him and after returning from his mission, they married on May 14, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised four sons and were wonderful parents. He was employed by Snelgrove Ice Cream, and later Safeway's until his retirement in 1983. He served in many church callings, including stake missionary in the Salt Lake Highland Stake and financial clerk in the Stratford East Ward. He also served in the High Priest Group Leadership of the Stratford East and Crystal Heights 2nd wards. He and his wife, Phyllis, served as tour guides at Welfare Square, 1996 to 2002. A quiet, humble man with a keen sense of humor, Rufus will always be remembered for his green thumb, and for the wonderful fruits and vegetables he raised in his orchard and garden in East Millcreek. He taught his sons the value of hard work by having them help with the gardening chores. He is preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, brothers Darrell and Dale, and sisters Lydia and Nila. He will be missed and always remembered by his sons Curtis (Carolyn), Lorin (Carol), Alan, and Duane (Jill); 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grand children; and many nieces, nephews and friends who loved him dearly. The family would like to thank the staff at Love Hospice and Holladay Healthcare for their care of Rufus. A viewing will be held Wednesday, March 24th, from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary (260 East South Temple). Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 25th, 12:00 p.m. at Crystal Heights 2nd Ward (1970 East Stratford Avenue), where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
