Afton Memories of Afton "Chaus" Kyriopoulos

Afton Chaus Kyriopoulos 1921 ~ 2011 Afton Chaus Kyriopoulos, age 90, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and mother-in-law died Saturday, April 16, 2011 of natural causes in McHenry, IL. She was born January 21, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah, daughter of William Dimetrius and Katherine (Liviakis) Chaus. Afton graduated from Granite High School, where she served as president of her graduating class. She was an active member of the Salt Lake City community as a Girl Scout Leader, PTA president, and member of the Women's Legislative Council. She was active professionally as an administrative assistant at the University of Utah Center for Social Studies, real estate agent, and property manager. Afton loved to read and her home was filled with famous quotations. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She always found a way to bring her family together. She was married to James Theodore Kyriopoulos on October 4, 1942. They were parents of one son and five daughters. She is survived by daughters, Marjorie Lin Kyriopoulos, Kathryn (Phil Yasuhara) Colemere, Mary (Ray Long) Kyriopoulos, Debra (Tom) Souvall and Jami (Steve) Switzer; a daughter-in-law, Christine (Gravis) Kyriopoulos; 11 grandchildren, William (Azarath) Bradley, Elizabeth Bradley, Angelique Colemere, Stephanie (Dan Grappendorf) Colemere, Tracy Souvall, Alexander Souvall, Aaron Switzer, Mason Switzer, Hannah Switzer, Niko Kyriopoulos, and Christopher (Coco) Kyriopoulos; and four great-grandchildren, Charlie and Phoebe Kyriopoulos, James Bradley, and Xander Kyriopoulos. She was preceded in death by her son, Frank and her ex-husband, James Kyriopoulos; three sisters, Alice Hale, Anne Stone, and Wanda Chaus; and two brothers, George and Jim Chaus. Visitation/Memorial Friday April 22, 5:00- 8:00 p.m., Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m., Deseret Memorial Mortuary, 700 South 36 East, Salt Lake City, UT. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 23 at 11:30 a.m., Holy Trinity Cathedral, 279 South 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT. Interment: Mt. Olivet. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to Holy Trinity Cathedral, Salt Lake City, UT or Fox River Country Day School, 1600 Dundee Ave., Elgin, IL 60120. May her memory be eternal.
